It looks like the Michigan football secondary has strengthened a little bit in preparation for the next campaign.

A program spokeswoman verified to the Free Press on Tuesday morning that Quinten Johnson, a defensive back who had previously declared for the 2019 NFL draft, had changed his mind and decided to stay in Ann Arbor for a sixth season of eligibility.

Johnson will therefore not participate in the program’s pro day scheduled for March 22 in Ann Arbor. Johnson was not one of the 18 invitees who helped U-M set an NFL combine record recently in Indianapolis.

Upon his return from a season in which he played almost completely as a backup, the 5-foot-11, 200-pound graduate student, who turns 24 in June, will take over as the team’s senior statesman, replacing Michael Barrett. During U-M’s national title season, Johnson played in all 15 games and finished with 22 tackles, five pass breakups, an interception, and a forced fumble.Michigan football's Quinten Johnson returning after previously declaring for NFL draft - Yahoo Sports

Although Johnson has played in 41 games in his career and logged over 1,000 defensive and special teams snaps, he is best remembered for his huge hit on Emeka Egbuka during the fourth quarter of Ohio State’s game the previous year. He also caused a fumble by Jalen Milroe when Alabama was behind in the Rose Bowl game.

Despite returning mainstaysMakari Paige and Makari Paige choosing to return for their senior seasons—one of the reasons rising sensation Keon Sabb chose to move to Alabama—the safety room is still one of the best on the team. However, this didn’t stop Johnson from coming back.
