Cleveland browns should have let him go” reaction on …

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Browns have now filled two of their offensive coach vacancies, hiring former Panthers running backs coach Duce Staley for that role here on Wednesday, a league source told cleveland.com.

He also interviewed with the Jets, who planned to make him an offer.

Staley, 48, replaces Stump Mitchell, who was fired last week, the same day the Browns parted ways with offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt and tight ends coach T.C. McCartney.

The Browns have also hired former Alabama offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tommy Rees to replace McCartney.

Depending on how the staff shakes out, Rees might have added responsibilities besides coaching Pro Bowler David Njoku, Harrison Bryant and Jordan Akins.

The Browns also plan to interview more offensive coordinator candidates in the coming days.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Deshaun Watson’s former Texans’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tim Kelly — the Titans offensive coordinator in 2023 — was not scheduled to interview.

Watson enjoyed his finest statistical season in 2020 under Kelly, leading the NFL with 4,823 yards and finishing second to Aaron Rodgers with a 112.4 rating.

He went 382 for 544 (70.2) that year with 33 touchdown passes and seven interceptions. The Texans went 4-12 that year, with Bill O’Brien getting fired at 0-4.

In Kelly’s first year as Watson’s coordinator, in 2019, Watson went 10-5 with 3,852 yards with 26 TDs, 12 INTs and a 98.0 rating.

So far, the Browns have interviewed three known candidates for offensive coordinator in Seahawks offensive line coach Andy Dickerson, former Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, and Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson.

Dickerson, a former Browns assistant, also interviewed for the Bengals vacant coordinator position, but that job was locked up Wednesday by Dan Pitcher, their former QB coach.
