Then, seemingly out of nowhere, it looked like hitters figured Olson out. He allowed five earned runs on June 1 against the Boston Red Sox, then was chased after just four innings against the Milwaukee Brewers when he gave up eight earned runs and an alarming 12 hits. Just a few outliers? Well, not necessarily, because the next time out on June 12 against the Washington Nationals, Olson surrendered 10 more hits, leading to five runs and yet another loss.
For a Tigers team that struggles on offense (and particularly when Olson pitches, for whatever reason) it was alarming.
Fast forward to June 23, and it was more of the same from Olson. Facing the Chicago White Sox, Olson finished 6⅓ innings while again giving up just four hits and no walks. The Sox managed to score two runs, but the Tigers finally provided him some run support that he’s been starved for all year, and they won the game, 11-2.
So is Olson officially past his cold spell? Saturday should help us answer that question as he looks to make his third straight quality start.

Season series: Tied 2-2
The Tigers fell for the 9th time in their last 12 games with a 5-2 loss Friday night in Los Angeles. RHP Kenta Maeda was the hard-luck loser (5 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 1 HR, 1 BB, 4 K), and Detroit’s only runs came on RBI walks from CF Matt Vierling and 1B Mark Canha. The Tigers are scoring fewer than 2 runs (1.8) per game over their last 5.
