Before this month, Gunner Stockton was a seldom-used backup to Georgia starting quarterback Carson Beck.
Stockton had only thrown 16 passes and run three times all season.
But when Beck sustained an injury on the last play of the first half of the Southeastern Conference title game on Dec. 7, Stockton took over, completed 12 of 16 attempts and helped the Bulldogs come back and win the league championship.
On Wednesday night, Stockton will face another high-stakes game in his first career start when No. 2 seed Georgia (11-2) faces No. 7 seed Notre Dame (12-1) in a College Football Playoff quarterfinal in New Orleans.
It is a difficult task considering Stockton’s inexperience and Notre Dame’s stifling defense.
Still, the Bulldogs will likely rely more heavily on their running game than usual and not put too much pressure on Stockton, whose last start came three years ago during his senior year at Rabun County High School in Tiger, Ga., about 70 minutes north of Georgia’s campus.
During his four-year career at Rabun County, Stockton set state records with 13,652 passing yards, 177 passing touchdowns and 77 rushing touchdowns. He was ranked No. 124 in the 247Sports Composite and seventh among quarterbacks in the high school Class of 2022.
As a freshman at Georgia in 2022, Stockton didn’t play in any games.
He appeared in four games last season, completing 12 of 19 passes and running 11 times, including going 6 of 10 for 96 yards and two touchdowns and gaining 46 yards on seven carries in the second half of Georgia’s Orange Bowl victory over Florida State.
Stockton stuck with Georgia this season even though he knew he would be a reserve behind Beck, who was a returning starter and preseason Heisman Trophy favorite.
