Moore, the offensive coordinator who also served as interim head coach at times during the 2023 season, was quickly named Jim Harbaugh’s replacement after he left for the Los Angeles Chargers on January 24. Michigan graduated as the No. 16 class in the 247Sports Composite rankings on National Signing Day, and Moore put his team together and got busy recruiting Michigan football players in 2025 and beyond. Current Michigan players are also eligible to enter the transfer portal through February. 23.Moore made a big move on Friday, February 9, hiring longtime NFL assistant Wink Martindale as defensive coordinator. Martindale held the position for the Giants from 2022 to 2023 and for the Ravens from 2018 to 2021 under John Harbaugh. However, there are still plenty of openings and there is still plenty of work to be done before spring training begins in March. Marshall was considered a priority for Harbaugh’s staff, and that carried over to the new regime. He received offers from some of the top schools in the country and visited Ann Arbor several times, including the weekend of the rivalry victory against Ohio State. Marshall is Illinois’ top player for the class of 2025 and is the No. 22 overall prospect according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. With nearly 30 schools already making offers to him, Moore’s staff has shown they want to keep Marshall a priority. He spoke with The Michigan Insider about his latest visit to Ann Arbor and the team also has information on when his next visit to campus will be.The Wolverines are also making a big splash in the 2026 class by signing Jackson Cantwell, a five-star offensive tackle from Missouri. According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, he is the No. 1 offensive tackle. 1 and player no. 2 overall in that cycle.
The Wolverines join a stacked offer list that includes Ohio State, Alabama, Florida State, Georgia and many others, so pursuing recruits of this caliber will be a big test for Moore. Cantwell recently spoke with 247Sports about his interest in Michigan and you can see what he had to say here.
As for the coaching staff, the hiring of Martindale is an important piece that should strengthen the staff. Martindale, a 60-year-old with more than 30 years of college and NFL coaching experience, gives Moore a veteran presence capable of overseeing that side of the ball since Moore’s background is on offense. Martindale’s deep list of coaching connections could also help fill out the rest of the staff, as Michigan still needs a defensive line coach and a linebackers coach.
