The current state of affairs between Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys is similar to that of Jared Goff with the Los Angeles Rams before to his trade to the Detroit Lions.

The situation among the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott appears to be similar to that of the Los Angeles Rams and Jared Goff prior to the Rams trading Goff to the Detroit Lions.

Was Prescott really going to follow in Goff’s footsteps?

In the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, Dak Prescott of Mississippi State was chosen by the Dallas Cowboys. In 2016, Tony Romo suffered a spinal fracture in a preseason game, and although the Cowboys had planned for Prescott to back up Romo, Prescott started the first game of the regular season.

Romo hardly made a comeback from his injuries until the end of the 2016 campaign. Since then, Prescott has been the Cowboys’ starting quarterback. Prescott has started 114 games during the regular season and seven postseason games in his eight seasons. His regular season record is an amazing 73-41, but his postseason record is a dismal 2-5.

Throughout his career, Prescott has received numerous honors. Twice at Mississippi State, he was selected to the first team of the SEC. He was recognized as the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2016. Three times, he was chosen to play in the Pro Bowl. He led the NFL in throwing touchdowns in 2023 and was selected to the second team of the All-Pro team.

Prescott and the Cowboys signed a four-year, $160 million contract in March 2021. Prescott is about to approach the last year of his contract; if he and the Cowboys can’t come to an agreement on an extension, he will become a free agency in 2025. Nevertheless, “the Cowboys seem to be content to let things play out,” said NFL.com.

Jared Goff, 29, was also taken in the 2016 NFL Draft, much like Prescott. Goff, nevertheless, was the top overall choice. After a stellar three years as the quarterback for the Golden Bears at the University of California, Berkeley, where he tossed 96 touchdown passes, Goff was traded up for by the Rams.

Goff started his debut campaign as Case Keenum’s backup. But for the last seven games of the season, he was the starting quarterback. The Rams’ 2016 season ended with a 4-12 record.

After Sean McVay was recruited by the Rams in 2017, Goff started to perform well. The Rams had a 24-7 regular-season record in 2017 and 2018, and after the 2018 season, they qualified for the Super Bowl. Goff was designated as the NFL in the years 2017 and 2018.
