Georgia vs. Ole Miss: Matthew Murrell Sinks Ole Miss with No Offense
After losing to the Georgia Bulldogs on Tuesday night due to the early departure of their top scorer, Matthew Murrell, the Ole Miss Rebels found it difficult to score points during the game.
In the program’s last away game of the 2024 season, the Ole Miss Rebels men’s basketball team fell to the Georgia Bulldogs 69-66 in Athens on Tuesday night. It hurts that Georgia lost because going into their game against Ole Miss, they had lost three straight games.
According to the Ole Miss Network, the Rebels’ top scorer, senior guard Matthew Murrell, went down with an illness in the first few minutes of the game, which put them behind early. After the half, Murrell did not come out from the locker room and during his little time on the court, he did not score.
With Murrell sidelined, Ole Miss looked to senior forward Jaemyn Brakefield, who scored 12 points in the first half to lead the squad. However, the remainder of the team found it difficult to establish an offensive rhythm. With seven points, Allen Flanigan came in second on the squad, although five of those came from free throws. The Rebels shot 12-29 as a team in the first half.
After trailing 35–32 going into the locker room, the Rebels surged ahead early in the second half. But it didn’t last long because the Bulldogs took the lead back by the U12 timeout. Tuesday night, Ole Miss led for two minutes and eight seconds.
Following a 9-0 scoring run, the Rebels attempted a comeback in the closing minutes, but Ole Miss was eliminated as soon as the Bulldogs got into the bonus.
Brakefield and Jaylen Murray led Ole Miss in scoring with 19 points apiece, and Flanigan (11) added double figures to their total. Ole Miss shot 27 percent from three and 39 percent from the field as a team, while the Bulldogs shot 19 and 44 percent from the field, respectively.
The Rebels’ last 2024 regular season game against the Texas A&M Aggies will now take place at the Sandy and John Black Pavilion. On Saturday, the game in Oxford is scheduled to tip off at 1:00 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on CBS.
