SAN JOSE, California: On Wednesday, the NHL was roiled by trades, and not unexpectedly, the Islanders kept silent.
By Friday at the latest, it does not appear probable that the 2022 deadline—in which Lou Lamoriello was the lone general manager to hold out on making a trade—will be repeated.
However, even with Scott Mayfield’s placement on long-term injured reserve, which gave Lamoriello a little extra cap space to deal with, the Islanders probably won’t be able to make any significant roster changes.
The summer months will be the Islanders’ busiest time of year. At that point, there will be a genuine opportunity to either alter the franchise’s trajectory or lock it in for a another year through Matt Martin and Cal Clutterbuck’s possible retirements and contract extensions.
