Breaking Sad News…Detroit Tigers humbles New York Yankees

The Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees, 7-0, on Thursday at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida. The Tigers are 12-8-1 in Grapefruit League play.
Casey Mize delivered a strong start as he continues to gear up for the regular season and add innings under his belt as he prepares to pitch for the Tigers for the first time since 2022.
Mize threw four innings of shutout ball against the Yankees, who had some starters in the lineup like Alex Verdugo, Gleyber Torres, Jose Trevino and Anthony Rizzo. His final stat line was four innings, zero runs, two hits allowed, two walks and four strikeouts.
In the first at-bat of the game, Verdugo reached on a single to get things started, but Mize followed it up by striking out Torres with an 86.4 mph slider on the outside corner, then got consecutive fly outs from Rizzo and Trevino. In his fourth and final inning,
Mize started by fighting back in a 3-1 count against Trevino to force a pop out, then gave up a triple to Trent Grisham after the Yankees’ center fielder got around on an 80.5 mph knuckle curve.
But Mize escaped that trouble, striking out Oscar Gonzalez on an 86.4 mph slider outside the zone. On the strikeout pitch, Carson Kelly whipped the ball down to third to pick off Grisham for an inning-ending double play, capping Mize’s day.
