Where Alabama and Auburn athletics stand in the SEC in terms of income and expenses
Out of the fifteen public school programs that are or will soon be in the SEC, Alabama athletics brought in the sixth-highest amount of money in the fiscal year 2023. Based on the NCAA income and spending data for all 15 teams that AL.com was able to get, Auburn came in eighth place in the measure.
Teams must submit an annual report to the NCAA detailing their receipts and outlays. Submissions have till January 15th.
Due to Vanderbilt’s private nature and exemption from open records requests, it was not included in the SEC colleges. Texas and Oklahoma are included, despite the fact that they were in the Big 12 for the whole of FY 2023.
With $279.2 million in revenue, Texas A&M led the 15 teams that were counted. Texas, a competitor state across the state, came in second place with $271.1 million, not far behind.
$200 million was earned by Alabama. During the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2023, and lasted from July 1, 2022, Alabama reported $195.3 million.
Together with the Texas universities, Georgia, Tennessee, and LSU outperformed the Crimson Tide in terms of overall athletics income. Oklahoma finished barely ahead of Auburn, one spot behind UA.
With the athletics department reporting $115.7 million in revenue, Mississippi State placed dead last in the league overall. Missouri earned $141.6 million, placing them one slot ahead of the Bulldogs.
TAMU topped the list in terms of athletics income, however it ranked lower in terms of real athletics investment. With $232.3 million in sports expenditures for FY 2023, Texas led the pack, and the Aggies came in fifth with $194.7 million.
With $212 million in expenses, Alabama led the SEC’s current membership in terms of spending. Auburn, which spent $192 million, came in sixth.
On the list, LSU, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M were placed in between the Tide and the Tigers. With $84.5 million in revenue above expenses, TAMU’s athletics department did post the largest surplus, well ahead of Texas’ $38.8 million in second place.
Mississippi State, which spent $121 million in FY 2023, came in last once more. The only other state where education spending was less than $150 million was Missouri. $141.6 million was reported by the Tigers.
When focusing just on football—one of the three sports, along with men’s and women’s basketball, that are broken out separately in the NCAA reports—Texas topped the list in terms of income. For FY 2023, the Longhorns claimed revenue of $183 million.
Georgia, at $152.7 million, came in a very distant second in that area. Auburn ranked sixth with $126.7 million, while Alabama came in fifth place with $129.3 million.
Oklahoma, the second prospective SEC member, did not disappoint either, ranking third on the list with $143.1 million in football revenue. Tennessee, which recorded $134.9 million in football income, was one spot behind in revenue.
Once more, Mississippi State ($41.3 million) came in last. The only other university to record revenue from football alone less than $50 million was Missouri ($44.9 million).
