SAD NEWS: Penrith panthers head coach just summitted his resignation letter to the management.
Nathan Cleary is the latest big name facing a stint on the sidelines after sustaining a hamstring injury just before half-time in Penrith’s 16-10 win over Canterbury on Friday night.
Cleary missed a month earlier in the season with a hamstring strain and appears set to be ruled out for at least a couple of weeks.
The Penrith star will undergo scans on Saturday afternoon to determine the severity of the injury, leaving him in doubt for NSW’s State of Origin series opener against Queensland in Sydney on June 5.
His father and Panthers coach, Ivan Cleary, said his son is “pretty shattered”.
“It’s very disappointing for him,” Ivan Cleary said.
“He felt it straight away, that would suggest it’s … decent.
“It hasn’t been an ongoing thing … He’s basically trained for two weeks without any drama.
The injury adds to the Blues’ concerns ahead of State of Origin I, coming hot on the heels of Manly fullback Tom Trbojevic suffering a grade two hamstring tear in Thursday’s clash with the Dolphins.
The Panthers struggled without Cleary on the field, failing to add any further tries to those scored by Luke Garner and Brian To’o as the hosts took a 12-0 lead into half-time.
However, despite the Bulldogs scoring through Matt Burton and Jacob Kiraz late in the second period, two penalty goals from Dylan Edwards ensured the Panthers claimed the victory to remain third on the NRL ladder.
In Friday’s late game, the Broncos subdued the under-fire Eels to claim a 30-14 victory in atrocious conditions in Parramatta.
The Broncos led 18-8 at half-time despite being second-best, in part down to two breakaway scores to Reece Walsh and Deine Mariner, who scored a double.
Ezra Mam and Selwyn Cobbo both scored stunning tries to condemn the Eels to a fifth defeat of the season.
Look back on how all the action unfolded in our live blog.
Plenty more action to come this weekend, with a triple-header tomorrow which I will be back for – and I hope you will to.
But for now, we’re done for the evening.
Thanks for being with us tonight – it was a pleasure to bring you all the action.
Let’s hope we have an injury free contest or three tomorrow, shall we?
Good night.“It was good in patches,” Walters said.
“I thought Parramatta played some good footy and they were a bit unlucky at times.
“When we had to score we picked up some points, which was very helpful.”
Walters says the breakaway try from Deine Mariner just before half-time was “very important” in the win.“Our try line attack against opposition isn’t that great,” he says.
“But we’re still scoring good points and enough points to win games.”
