For the second year in a row, Smith renegotiated his contract in order to remain in Minnesota.

Harrison Smith, a safety for the Minnesota Vikings, agreed to a restructured contract earlier this month in order to remain with the organization. However, his new deal will allow him to return without a restructure if he choose to play in 2025, having taken a pay reduction for the second straight year.

Ben Goessling of the Star Tribune reports that Smith’s most recent restructuring included the final two years of a four-year, $64 million contract that was inked prior to the 2021 campaign. As part of the agreement, Smith will get a $7 million signing bonus in addition to base pay of $1.49 million in 2024 and $1.255 million in 2025.

The Vikings will have cap room for this season and the following one thanks to the new agreement. According to Goessling, Smith’s new deal frees up $11.9 million in 2024 and $15.5 million in 2025, giving the Vikings plenty of room to maneuver over the next two seasons.

This might, in the near run, result in an increase in Minnesota’s $17.8 million cap space allotted by Over The Cap for the extensions of Justin Jefferson and Christian Darrisaw. Long-term, it provides the Vikings with more than $106.4 million to use in 2025 to address their free agency needs.

The agreement benefits Smith as much as the Vikings since it eliminates the need for another restructure should Smith choose to play in 2025.

The 35-year-old has played his whole 12-year career in Minnesota, where he leads the team in interceptions (34), tackles (766) and defensive touchdowns (four), as well as pass deflections (86).Harrison Smith Talks Contract & Staying a Viking

Smith has played 176 games as a Viking, which ranks him 15th in franchise history.

The Vikings are deep at the position going into next season with Cam Bynum and Josh Metellus rounding out the safety room, and Smith’s new contract may ensure that he stays in Minnesota until he makes the decision to retire.
