Years of preparation went into Peralta’s rise to the top spot, and he’s ready for the task as Opening Day approaches.

Phoenix — The Brewers’ ability to produce homegrown, elite starting pitchers has been a key factor in their recent success. At the top of their rotation over the last few seasons, Milwaukee’s lineup features two-time All-Star Brandon Woodruff, 2021 NL Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes, and Freddy Peralta.

However, Peralta has emerged as the Brewers’ standout and Opening Day starter after Burnes was dealt to the Orioles last month and Woodruff missed the entire season due to surgery to repair the anterior capsule in his right shoulder.

Regarding his status as the team’s starting arm, Peralta told Yahoo Sports, “I feel grateful.” There is a lengthy procedure that we must comprehend. Most likely, I was unaware of [how] all that time. But it’s a process. Learning from the veteran guys. Just grateful about everything and whatever is to come.”

Peralta did not inherit the starting position in the Brewers’ rotation this season. The Brewers have had the opportunity to see how he has responded to various circumstances and opportunities over the last six seasons. He pitched in the team’s rotation for half of the season when he was first called up in 2018. He transitioned from the bullpen to a swingman role in 2019 and then again in the abbreviated season of 2020.

When Peralta was able to join the rotation on a full-time basis in 2021, he flourished. After making his first appearance in the NL All-Star game and going 10-5 with a brilliant 2.81 ERA, he made a huge leap forward and emerged as one of the top pitchers in baseball. Between the two seasons later, he has established himself as a consistent role model. He earned a career-high 30 starts in the previous season and crossed the 200-strikeout mark for the first time in his career.
