For the foreseeable future, Jason Kidd hopes to continue leading the Dallas Mavericks as head coach.

Kidd is “hopeful that he can secure an extension this summer,” according to Sam Amick of The Athletic. Kidd’s contract is valid through the 2024–25 season.

Since 2021–2022—Kidd has led the Mavericks as their head coach.

The Mavs advanced to the Western Conference Finals, where they were defeated by the Golden State Warriors, and finished fourth in the Western Conference with a 52-30 record in his first season in Dallas.

Dallas was anticipated to improve on that performance in 2022–2023; however, after the team ended 11th in the Western Conference with a 38–44 record and missed the playoffs despite the addition of Kidd, doubts were raised regarding Kidd’s future with the team Brooklyn Nets player Kyrie Irving.

With a 43-29 record, the Mavericks are now sixth in the Western Conference and have a good chance of qualifying for the postseason.

With the addition of Dante Exum, Derrick Jones Jr., and Dereck Lively II in the draft, Dallas’ roster is significantly stronger this year. The Mavericks’ recovery from a difficult 2022–23 campaign has also been aided by the addition of Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington via trade.

With Kidd leading the way, the Mavericks have the sixth-best offensive rating in the NBA (117.9). With a 115.8 rating, the defense might use some assistance, but recently, the squad has made great progress in this area.

The Mavericks have the second-best defense and fourth-best net rating in the league through their previous ten games. That corresponds with the offense that was sixth best throughout that time.

Kidd should get an extension if his players keep putting up this kind of effort and the Mavericks go deep into the playoffs.
