Charleston Transfer Facility James Scott Makes a Louisville Commitment

The second transfer to join his former head coach in the Cardinals is the former center for the Cougars.

LOUISVILLE, KY: Another transfer is joining the Louisville men’s basketball program, this time as head coach Pat Kelsey’s replacement.

Center James Scott, who played with Kelsey at Charleston during his true freshman year, announced his commitment to the Cardinals to On3’s Joe Tipton on Sunday.

Along with guard Reyne Smith, who committed to the Cards on Saturday, Scott is the second player to follow Kelsey from Charleston to Louisville.

This past season, the 6-foot-11, 210-pound big man was a consistent rotational contributor for the Cougars. In just 16.1 minutes per game, Scott averaged 5.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks while starting four of the 35 games he played in. He also led the team in field goal percentage at an incredible 79.2 percent. He scored in double figures six times, won the CAA Rookie of the Week award twice, and was selected to the CAA All-Rookie Team.

Several NBA scouts have already taken notice of Scott’s skills during his rookie season. An unidentified scout gushed about Scott in a report published by the Post & Courier earlier this month, stating that “his length, his athleticism, and his footwork are exactly what NBA teams are looking for nowadays.”

Upon graduating from high school, the Fayetteville, North Carolina, prospect was considered a three-star. According to 247Sports’ internal rankings, Scott was the 38th best center in the Class of 2023 and the seventh best player in the state of North Carolina.

Scott and Smith won’t be Louisville’s final additions to the transfer pool this summer. The Cardinals’ roster started to rotate as soon as second-year head coach Kenny Payne was fired on March 13.

After their 2023–24 season ended, twelve Louisville players had signed up for the site as of March 30. The only players that are now expected to return to the Cardinals are guard Ty-Laur Johnson and walk-on guard Hercy Miller, as two more have graduated. Additionally, UofL’s Class of 2024 contains no committed high school recruits.
