Former reliever for the Milwaukee Brewers finds new home with the Yankees
Before an injury severely limited his output in 2021, the righty was a major contributor.
Jake Cousins, a reliever, appeared to be a key member of the Milwaukee Brewers bullpen for many years to come at one point. In 2021, the right-hander appeared out of nowhere and had a fantastic rookie campaign.
Sadly, he didn’t get his wish over the following several years, and in 2023, he and the Brewers parted ways. Before becoming a free agent and signing a minor league contract with the White Sox this past offseason, he would play the remainder of the season with the Astros organization.
After spring training, cousins had a chance to reach the White Sox roster, but they were ultimately sent back to the minor leagues. However, it appears like he will be playing in the minor leagues for a different team beginning in April.
Former Brewers reliever Jake Cousins was traded to the Yankees by the White Sox on Sunday.
When Cousins first made his breakthrough to The Show with the Brewers in 2021, most fans were not aware of him. After being signed by the organization in 2019, he continued to play independent ball in Double-A Biloxi as of the start of the 2021 season.
Early in the season, Cousins would show promise, get promoted to Triple-A quickly, and in late June, the Brewers would pick his contract. That season, he pitched in 30 games for Milwaukee, recording a 2.70 ERA and 13.2 K/9, mostly because of a massive frisbee slider that confused hitters.
The following season, Cousins was expected to play a significant role in the bullpen, but an elbow injury ended his season. Reluctant to undergo Tommy John surgery, he would eventually make a late-season comeback and, strangely enough, record another 2.70 ERA in just 13.1 innings.
Regretfully, by 2023, things would appear worse. With an even higher 7.30 ERA in Milwaukee after having a 4.82 ERA there ERA in Nashville’s Triple-A, the Brewers would choose to sever relations. He didn’t do much during his stint with the Astros Triple-A team to convince them to bring him up to the major league roster.
