Victor Wembanyama has hit his first major fine, another important milestone in his young NBA career. The incident occurred following the conclusion of San Antonio’s 130-126 OT win vs. New York on March 29.
The NBA announced Sunday that the San Antonio Spurs rookie has been fined $25,000 for throwing the basketball into the stands against the New York Knicks. His only previous fine was $2,000 for a technical foul for bouncing the ball over his head in frustration.
The Spurs and Knicks faced off Friday, a 130-126 overtime win for San Antonio. As the clock ran out, Wembanyama hugged the ball with both arms, appearing to try to keep it away from the Knicks’ Jalen Brunson. Then he tossed the ball to the Spurs home crowd.
Brunson had just scored an incredible 61 points for the Knicks, who ended up losing by just four despite his individual effort. Wembanyama had 40 points, 20 rebounds and seven assists for San Antonio.
The win gave the Spurs their third in their last five games. Of course, the Spurs have the third-worst record in the NBA, but even small victories are victories.
Victor Wembanyama recorded 40 points & 20 rebounds in the Spurs’ overtime victory on Friday. A record hit of two fines in the players book is a sad milestone.
