Even though it was a very tough series, the Los Angeles Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs after losing to the Denver Nuggets in five games. Nevertheless, neither for the Lakers nor for a club led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis is being competitive enough on its own.

You can look at those teams that are now winning deep into the playoffs and assess what those squads have that the Lakers don’t in order to close the gap and potentially challenge for the championship.

Among those teams is the Dallas Mavericks, who, after missing out on the play-in and playoffs entirely the previous season, are now in the NBA Finals.

In the video that follows, I examine the lessons the Lakers can learn from the way the Mavericks assembled their team throughout the summer and trade deadline in order to start this deep playoff run.

For the Lakers to be serious contenders, they must make improvements in a number of categories, including those covered in this article. While there is still much work to be done, the Lakers can at least see some direction toward their desired outcomes by using other teams as a North Star.

The Mavericks also shown how off-season and in-season decisions can elevate a team from a mere playoff candidate to a title contender in the course of just one season.
