RJ Davis, a guard for UNC basketball, is the first recipient of the Jerry West Award.

RJ Davis, a four-year UNC basketball treasure, won the Jerry West Award on Saturday, adding to his already impressive trophy collection. This award is given annually to the best shooting guard in the country. The unanimous first-team All-American and ACC Player of the Year made history by being the first Tar Heel to win the honor since it was instituted in 2015.

Only two ACC players have won the West trophy: Davis, who averaged 21.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists for a UNC basketball team that finished first in the ACC regular season and received a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament before losing to Alabama in the Sweet 16. RJ Barrett of Duke was the first in 2019.

Great Day Tar Heel posted on social media that Davis has the most made threes in program history as he concluded his senior year with 113. In a late-February home victory over Miami, he also recorded the best scoring performance in Dean E. Smith Center history with 42 points. And among all-time Tar Heels, his career free throw percentage of 85.8 ranks first.

In addition, the New York native’s 784 points for the Tar Heels in 2023–24 currently record the highest point total for any UNC guard in a season.

Since the NCAA does not count the shortened 2020–21 season—his rookie campaign—against anyone’s eligibility, RJ Davis has not yet disclosed his plans for the upcoming campaign.
