Just in: Auburn Tigers head coach in massive contract deal with top-five elite mega-star quarterback….

These universities might be able to sign a top quarterback prospect.

When four-star quarterback Husan Longstreet declares his decision on Sunday, April 14, he will be one of the top recruits in the 2025 college football class. As the cycle’s No. 5 signal-caller, Auburn, Ole Miss, Oregon, and Texas A&M are all vying for his services; yet, the Aggies might have a small edge in a recruitment that will come down to the wire.

The most recent steps in Longstreet’s process were described by Tom Loy, national recruiting analyst for 247Sports, on The College Football Recruiting Show, less than a week before the latter made his declaration. Recounting Longstreet’s previous visits, Loy noticed the confidence levels of each recruiting staff member in completing the task at hand and obtaining a commitment from one of the country’s top precious opportunities.

“This recruitment has gotten way more wild than I expected,” remarked Loy. “I’m honestly not sure if anything should surprise me in this day and age of recruiting, but here we are.”

Auburn, who finished the 2023 season with the lowest passing average among SEC schools, is in dire need of quarterback assistance. Walker White, a four-star prospect who entered the school in the 2024 cycle, has the potential to be the Tigers’ quarterback of the future, but Hugh Freeze will have more alternatives in the long run if he and Longstreet deepen their room-sharing relationship the following season. Given that Longstreet was on campus over the weekend and gave the program high marks, Auburn has the advantage of being the destination of his final visit among his top schools.

Loy: “I was informed that before he set foot on Auburn’s campus once more, the original goal was to shut it down and make a decision by April 14th. Then everything was different. He traveled to Auburn, Ole Miss, A&M, and Oregon. Inside the Auburn building, there’s a strong sense that this last visit changed everything. Less than a week after his commitment announcement, the Tigers are leading, and there are several in that office who genuinely think this trip was a game-changer. That may not be my view or viewpoint, but that’s how people feel inside that building.”

One of the most dynamic attacks in college football exists at Ole Miss, and in 2024 it may even surpass previous records. However, things become a little less apparent at quarterback after Jaxson Dart leaves the team. Walker Howard, an LSU transfer who is ranked fifth among quarterbacks in his recruiting class, is nevertheless a well-known backup who hasn’t played much in his two years of collegiate football. In this fast-paced approach, Longstreet could immediately compete with Howard for a position or fill in when Howard’s term at the top of the depth chart ends.

“I think Ole Miss is fascinating. The combination of Longstreet and head coach Lane Kiffin appears to be excellent on paper. The Rebels personnel feels that their visit was excellent. They think they have a chance. However, there isn’t a lot of assurance or hope coming from Ole Miss insiders that they will ultimately be Longstreet’s final destination. Furthermore, I have no idea exactly where they will go if they miss on Longstreet.”
