WACO, Texas — Scott Drew, who was linked to the Kentucky coaching job after John Calipari left for Arkansas, will stay as the men’s basketball coach at Baylor. On social media, Drew expressed his desire to “bring more championships” to the program.
In a message on X, the former Twitter, Drew shared his Christian beliefs, saying he felt “God has called my family and I to continue our work here at Baylor, surrounded by the best people and community anyone could be blessed to have.” He said, “We look forward to working together to bring more championships to Waco (Texas)” and thanked Baylor President Linda Livingstone and athletic director Mack Rhoades for their support.
After Calipari stepped down on Tuesday, the 53-year-old Drew—who led the Bears to the NCAA championship during the COVID-19-shortened 2020–21 season—became Kentucky’s preferred choice to succeed him. Calipari won the 2012 title. When Calipari was presented as Arkansas’ coach on Wednesday, he stated that the Wildcats program, which he oversaw for 15 years, “needed to hear another voice.” Drew was also a candidate for Louisville to take Kenny Payne’s place after his firing.
Drew’s declaration of his intention to stay comes after Alabama’s Nate Oats, who on Monday, in the midst of rumors of Kentucky’s potential interest, reaffirmed his commitment to the Crimson Tide. Coach of the Chicago Bulls Billy Donovan acknowledged his dedication to the NBA team while calling himself “flattered” to be discussed for the position he previously held as an assistant.
Dan Hurley, the coach of UConn, was also mentioned, which seems improbable given that he just guided the Huskies to their second straight national championship on Monday night.
In his 21 seasons at the Big 12 Conference institution, Drew has a 446-244 record and has guided Baylor to ten straight trips to the NCAA Tournament.
