Rod Wood was asked to bring the black uniforms of the Detroit Lions by Dan Campbell. Wood concurred, but not before Campbell had to take action.

At Ford Field on Thursday night, the Detroit Lions revealed their new uniforms to a boisterous crowd of more than 5,000 supporters. The much-anticipated return of the black uniform option—which the Lions had given up on in 2017—was showcased during the event.

As it happens, three years ago, during coach Dan Campbell’s first few months on the job, a conversation led to the decision to bring back the black outfits. Rod Wood, the team president, elaborated.

“When he was here (as a player), he wore the black jerseys,” Wood remarked. He said, “Hey Rod, when can we get the black jerseys back?” when we were in the draft room.

The black uniforms of the current age differ significantly from those of the past. Compared to earlier times, the white outline doesn’t conflict with the numbering as much. More significantly, compared to the silver pant options of the early aughts, the black uniforms now go better along with black and blue pant options. The Lions have a new chrome blue helmet with a black Lions logo decal on top of it all.

According to Wood, “I think they dress even better than when he was here (as a player).” “It looks better with the combos of pants than with the silver pants we were wearing at the time.”
