Charleston, South Carolina ā Following the departure of Pat Kelsey, the men’s coach at College of Charleston, who took a job with the Cardinals last week, the university has hired Chris Mack, a former coach at Louisville.
Matt Roberts, the athletic director, said on Tuesday that Mack has accepted a five-year contract to take over the team.
Mack will get a yearly salary of $1.1 million until the 2028ā2029 campaign. In addition, he qualifies for a variety of performance bonuses, ranging from $5,000 for an NIT appearance to $150,000 for winning the NCAA Tournament.
Mack would owe the school $1.5 million if he were to quit during the first two seasons. In his third season, that amount drops to $1 million, and in his fourth season, it drops to $750,000. If he leaves during his last season, he would owe nothing.
Should the school fire Mack, it would still owe him 100% of the remaining amount on the contract.
Mack also received a $35,000 signing bonus, which was set aside in the agreement for interim housing and relocating costs.
Mack spent 12 complete seasons as a coach at Xavier and Louisville, and he made the NCAA Tournament nine times. Mack was fired by the Cardinals in January 2022 after his record of 6-8 was reached. Louisville had suspended Mack for the first six games of the season. which claimed that by terminating former Cardinals assistant coach Dino Gaudio, he had broken school policy.
