The Yankees honored John Sterling as their radio voice for 36 seasons and 5,631 games.
NEW YORK (AP) – After 36 seasons as a New York Yankees broadcaster, John Sterling was honored on Saturday during an on-field ceremony.
On July 4, Sterling, who turns 86, was given a jersey with the number 5,631, which stands for the number of regular and postseason games he called as the team’s radio play-by-play announcer.
He aired clips from his most memorable calls. In addition to video tributes from Paul O’Neill, Bernie Williams, and Derek Jeter, Tino Martinez gave out sterling silver Yankees cufflinks and an engraved silver microphone to broadcast partners Michael Kay and Suzyn Waldman. With his family at his sides, Sterling accepted the jersey from Haley Swindal Steinbrenner, the late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner’s granddaughter.
The Yankees’ dugout was played with Frank Sinatra’s rendition of “My Way” while Sterling walked back with stiffness. In the first inning of their Roll Call versus Tampa Bay, Bleacher Creatures screamed his name.
As the crowd stood and screamed his name throughout the homage, Sterling said, “What I really want to do is to thank you and I’ll tell you why.” “Many individuals and groups have approached me with love, respect, and kindness. How fortunate can you be that people recognize and appreciate what you do for a living? You know, in order to raise these folks, I had to earn money. Thus, during the past 36 years, you, the fans, have been incredible to me.”
