25 April (UPI) — The renowned cornerback Darrell Green’s No. 28 jersey will be retired by the Washington Commanders for the 2024–25 campaign, the team announced on Thursday.
In a press statement from the Commanders, Green stated, “I am beyond grateful for this honor and to new ownership, who embraced my wife and me from day one.” “I am honored to have my jersey retired here. I played my entire career here, met my wife here, and served my church and community here.
“The team means everything to this community, and I am encouraged not only for us to win a Super Bowl, but to win the community back.”
The 64-year-old Green was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008. In the 1983 NFL Draft, he was selected by the Washington Redskins with the 28th overall choice. Green played with the NFC team throughout his whole 20-year NFL career. He was a two-time Super Bowl champion, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, and a 1991 first-team All-Pro.
In terms of interceptions (54), defensive touchdowns (6), starts (258), and games played (295), he boasts franchise records. In addition, he won the NFL’s Fastest Man competition four times.

Josh Harris, the owner of the Commanders, stated, “Darrell Green gave everything he had to this organization and fanbase for 20 years.” “He continued to give back to this community, which still holds him in the highest regard, even after leaving the burgundy and gold.
“No. 28 will never again be worn by a member of our team. I appreciate you, Darrell, for being a true football player for Washington—both on and off the field.”
On Friday in Detroit, Green will reveal the Commanders’ selection in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The date and time — and the Commanders’ opponent—to be revealed at a later time—for his jersey retiring ceremony.
