Tennis: Men fall short in a rated match against Indiana but win on a beautiful senior day.
In the regular season finale, the Wildcats pick up steam in anticipation of the Big Ten Championships.
When the No. 69 Northwestern men’s tennis team hit the court as the higher-ranked, albeit marginally, opponent against the No. 70 Indiana Hoosiers, there was some hope heading into what seemed to be an even match.
This was true even though the Wildcats had an 8-16 record and a 2-6 conference record, while Indiana had a 15-9 record and a 3-4 record going into the game. Sadly, Northwestern’s record didn’t match Indiana’s actual performance, as the Wildcats lost 4-1.
The Wildcats dropped the doubles point for the fourth straight game. Match victories were comfortably won by the Indiana pairs of Jagger Saylor and Ilya Tiraspolsky at No. 1 doubles and Facundo Yunis and Luc Bouiler at No. 3 doubles. Saylor
and Tiraspolsky triumphed 6-2 over Felix Nordby and Gleb Blekher, Northwestern’s No. 50 nationally rated pair, while Yunis and Boulier prevailed 6-3.
The Wildcats would win the opening singles point of the day thanks to a fantastic matchup between No. 4 Nordby and Indiana’s Nikola Kolyachev. Nordby won 6-1, 6-1, therefore there was never any dispute about the match.
Coach Arvid Swan of Northwestern’s men’s tennis team said of the player, “He’s been good all year, but he’s developed a lot as a player.” At this point, he is competing at a high level and his forehand is a pretty powerful weapon for him. He has had chances to win even in the games he has lost, and he is playing with a great deal of confidence. He controlled the entire game today.
In spite of Nordby’s display, the
His teammates Wildcats would suffer cruel treatment for the remainder of the game as they started to crumble one by one.
Yunis defeated No. 2 Blekher 6-2, 6-2, first. Tiraspolsky was the next to finish, going up against NU’s No. 5 Max Bengtsson. That match would go to Tiraspolsky, 6-2, 6-2. Soon after, Saylor overcame No. 3 Saiprakash Goli 6-4, 6-1, and Indiana closed the door on the Wildcats. The Hoosiers won another straight sets match.
Just before going to the third sets, the final two matches ended. Presley Thieneman of Northwestern, however, put on a remarkable display in one of the matches, winning a set over Sam Landau, the player rated 90th in the country.
