Reasons Not to Trade Deebo Samuel to the 49ers
There has been conflicting information on the 49ers’ chances of moving Deebo Samuel. Although there is some merit to trading him, the 49ers shouldn’t actually do it.

Regarding the possibility of the San Francisco 49ers trading receiver Deebo Samuel, reports have been contradictory today.

The earliest mention of Samuel being “likely” to be dealt on Day 2 of the NFL draft came in the morning. It appears “very unlikely,” according to a new report, that Samuel will be traded at any stage during the draft.

I don’t care which way the 49ers are leaning; they shouldn’t trade Samuel, thus the reports are meaningless. Their goal of going back to the Super Bowl and winning it at last is not at all aided by trading him.

The 49ers are indicating that they can run the offense with youngster Ricky Pearsall starting opposite Brandon Aiyuk at wide receiver. This is evident in their decision to release Samuel. The 49ers would be insane to think their offense won’t falter when they switch from Samuel to Pearsall.

I can see why you would want to accept Samuel’s dead cap hit now in order to free up room for the upcoming season. And given the 49ers truly needed to restock on young guys, it does make sense to load up on some Day 2 selections as a result of dealing Samuel.

However, I don’t believe any of those will help them, particularly in 2024. In essence, they will inflict a harm on themselves, which would be fitting, considering that’s how they lost the majority of their games the previous season. Samuel contributes to the offense in countless ways that go beyond just his output.

Will Pearsall’s impact be the same in year one? Not at all. With the movements and formations that Kyle Shanahan loves to run out of, Samuel makes a fantastic pre-snap decoy. The same plays that go to Pearsall won’t be as effective for Samuel.

Hold Samuel. After 2024, it will be simpler to let go of him, and Pearsall is not required to be among the best players the 49ers use to guide the attack.
