Despite his leaving Brisbane broncos today disappointment will be on Walters….

Ezra Mam, a star for the Brisbane Broncos, speaks up about the racism incident and says he doesn’t regret using a slur.

Brisbane’s fifth and ninth Ezra Mam says he is ready to speak with Sydney Roosters prop Spencer Leniu at the appropriate moment and has no remorse for confronting the player about his racial insult in Las Vegas.

Speaking for the first time since Leniu referred to him as a monkey during the opening round, Mam, a proud Torres Strait Islander, did so on Tuesday. Mam lodged an official grievance on Leniu’s remarks on the field. The NRL judiciary later imposed an eight-game suspension on Leniu.

When asked if he regretted how he had treated himself, Mam answered in the negative.

“I simply adhered to my convictions and my upbringing as a robust, cultural man,” he remarked.

“My culture is something I’m proud of, and I will continue to fight for it.” That is who I am, and that is why I am here.

Leniu had previously offered to meet with Mam in Brisbane; Mam declined, but he stated he would be willing to do so in the future.

“I believe we will talk when the time is appropriate,” Mam remarked.

The Broncos’ standout foursome of Adam Reynolds (hamstring), Payne Haas (knee), Brendan Piakura (ankle), and Deine Mariner (back) all trained hard on Tuesday to prepare for Saturday’s away game against the Wests Tigers, giving them a significant boost.

“It gives the whole squad a huge confidence boost,” Mam remarked.

I always feel like I have a little more of a responsibility when (halfback) Reyno isn’t around. Leading the boys around and attempting to play my best when he’s not there gives me a lot of confidence.

“It will be an enjoyable game when he returns, along with the other boys.”
