The Minnesota Vikings selected 21-year-old quarterback JJ McCarthy of Michigan with the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on Thursday night, fulfilling McCarthy’s ambition of being drafted in the NFL.

McCarthy’s selection marked the sixth straight year Michigan has had a player selected in the first round and extended the Wolverines’ record of 86 successive drafts in which at least one Michigan player was selected. In addition, he ties Forest Evashevski (1941) for the highest-drafted quarterback in program history and becomes the first quarterback selected in the first round for the Wolverines since Jim Harbaugh in 1987.

It made sense to select McCarthy because they needed to replace the quarterback position. Even if I don’t adore him as much as other people do, I’m curious to see how Kevin O’Connell and the others manage to make it work.”

“Although McCarthy’s work in Michigan’s run-heavy scheme makes it extremely tough to fully estimate what he’ll be immediately in the NFL, his skill set has had NFL evaluators on high alert for the past three years. McCarthy is an unquestionable winner, having gone 63-3 since high school. He is a really difficult, aggressive quarterback in the style of his previous coach, Jim Harbaugh. He might have to spend a little time learning from Sam Darnold, but I think he has a long-term fit with Kevin O’Connell and may be more prepared than people realize.”

“Minnesota only needed to move up one pick to acquire their quarterback competition for Sam Darnold because Penix was selected before McCarthy. McCarthy is a versatile player who excels when called upon to carry the offense in college, but he wasn’t frequently expected to do so. Instead, he was asked to make plays in moments where Michigan needed him to. As a rookie quarterback, he does find himself in one of the better situations in the NFL because Minnesota boasts a strong offensive line and a quality receiving corps.”
