Gunnar Henderson and Anthony Volpe are set to square off in the next epic AL East shortstop showdown.

Before the game on Tuesday at Camden Yards, manager Aaron Boone stated, “I think they’re both going to have really successful, long careers.” “It is evident from what Gunnar is doing—we seen it for the majority of the previous season—just how dynamic an all-around player he is. Anthony, without a doubt, seems to be our shortstop for the foreseeable future. He keeps getting better and better, as we can see. From a shortstop perspective, I believe both teams are in excellent shape for a while.”

The two 2019 draft picks, Volpe, who went 30th to the Yankees, and Henderson, who went 42nd (the first choice of the second round) to the Orioles, may both have a variety of effects on the game, depending on where they are in the lineup or out in the field.

Two months younger than Volpe, Henderson is the current AL Rookie of the Year and leads the American League with 2.1 fWAR as of Tuesday.

Notably, Henderson is just three years older than Yankees star Juan Soto, who came in second place with 1.9 fWAR. Volpe, on the other hand, came in seventh place with 1.5 fWAR.

(Another young great shortstop, Bobby Witt Jr. of the Royals, who was selected second overall in 2019 and has a 1.7 fWAR, is ranked fourth on that list.)

McCann remarked of the 22-year-old, “The thing that people lose track of is [Henderson] is still so young.” “I mean, he played baseball in high school and the minor leagues not too long ago. The most amazing thing, in my opinion, is that even though he’s doing so well, he still needs to mature. He is still developing, though perhaps not to the same extent as before. That will occur very [accidentally] as a result of in-game activities. He will be recording at-bats against pitchers that he will face over the course of the next few years in order to build up a memory bank that he will need later on.

Thus, while I find it interesting to watch him succeeding now, In addition, I believe that what he might be doing in two or three years is very frightening when you consider the big picture.

Henderson became the youngest player in MLB history to hit double ten home runs before May 1st on Monday night against Clarke Schmidt, smashing his 10th home run in his first 28 games of the season.

With six thefts and a.983 OPS going into Tuesday’s game, the left-handed hitter was batting.289 overall.

“The entire package,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said, “the defense he’s playing, what he’s doing on the bases, he’s gone left-on-left, base hits the other way.” He’s also quite grounded. Despite his modesty, he exudes confidence. This shouldn’t surprise him, in my opinion. I believe he feels that this is the proper way for him to play.

Volpe, who came into Tuesday batting.272 with a.766 OPS and seven steals, may be considered similarly situated. The current AL Gold Glove winner’s season has cooled off a bit after a scorching start, but his off-season swing adjustments have changed him as a hitter in Year 2 and returned it to its previous level during his ascent through the minor league ranks.
