Before the quarterback arrived on campus, Kenny Dillingham shares what former Auburn football head coach Gus Malzahn told him about Bo Nix.

In 2019, Gus Malzahn, the head coach of Auburn football at the time, informed Kenny Dillingham that he was “set” at quarterback because of incoming 5-star freshman Bo Nix. This information was made public during the Grit and Glory documentary series.

The head coach at Auburn essentially informed me, “We have Bo Nix coming,” when I was recruited. You’re all set. According to Dillingham (via Ducks Digest). “There was a ton of hype surrounding this and Auburn.”

In many ways, Malzahn was correct. It was later found that Nix’s primary childhood desire was to play in the NFL, yet he somehow managed to defeat Alabama in his first Iron Bowl and record nine victories in his first season behind center.

Sadly, Nix regressed in his second year, losing the narrative he had acquired in his initial year and collapsing under Chad Morris. Malzahn was fired due to his lackluster hiring of an offensive coordinator and his dismal handling of a six-win season, which included criticizing the program’s defeat to South Carolina—one of its worst losses under Malzahn’s tenure—as well as his attitude.
