NBA Free Agency: New York Knicks’ OG Anunoby is anticipated to “consider deals” with rival teams
This past season, OG Anunoby was a game-changer for the New York Knicks. His midseason departure from the Toronto Raptors was a wise choice for the Knicks, as seen by their quite spectacular postseason run.
The way that New York struggled in the latter stages of their second-round series against the Indiana Pacers while Anunoby was out due to injury is evidence of this.
It turns out that the 26-year-old’s future in New York is unknown, thus the Knicks may need to find a more long-term alternative for him.
The Knicks’ present position with Anunoby was just clarified by NBA expert Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports. The 6-foot-7 small forward is “widely expected to decline” his player option for 2024–25, according to Fischer. This is predicated on the idea that he wants to make more money than the $19.9 million he is expected to make in the upcoming season, and the only way he can do this is if he signs a larger free agency contract.
It seems that Anunoby’s decision to rejoin the Knicks this summer is not certain “At last week’s NBA Draft Combine, rumors were circulating among team officials that Anunoby’s status with the Knicks is not as clear-cut. Perhaps Anunoby will be able to get a higher salary offer from the Knicks as a result of those signals to opposing teams. However, according to insiders, a number of teams left the Draft Combine believing Anunoby may become a free agent and explore offers from teams other than New York. Fischer wrote about this.
The Knicks still seem to be in the lead in the race to sign Anunoby, which is wonderful news for them. Unfortunately, though, the former NBA champion will be considering offers from rival teams, which might force New York to pay a larger salary to keep him around.
The worst-case scenario for the Knicks would be if Anunoby decides to sign a new deal with a different team, in which case New York would have nothing at all.
