Barry Ferguson has dismissed the idea that Philippe Clement’s summer clear-out, which takes place before Rangers vs. Celtic in the Scottish Cup Final, may already be giving some of the team’s stars pause.
The management feels that the deadwood at the team has reached the end of their career and has great plans for the upcoming season, which involve adding a lot of fresh players. When it comes to the timing before this afternoon’s major event at Hampden, several questioned Clement’s decision to make his opinions about the renovation at Ibrox known in the middle of the week.
However, Ferguson wrote in his Daily Record column that whatever concerns the team might have had about not showing up on game day were just the constant worry about their futures. Fergie claims that their professionalism shouldn’t permit them.

Then, I’ll head back up the tunnel and beg the guys wearing those blue shirts on cup final day for a favor: ‘Whatever you guys do today, make sure you bring that thing back with you to Ibrox!'”
“I have to admit, even after 22 years, this competition’s Old Firm showpiece remains my all-time favorite. It’s hard to believe that.” I’ve had the good fortune to participate in some amazing games, but that particular day always makes me grin. We faced not just our most formidable opponents but also a highly skilled Celtic team. I was competing for a team that had just as much talent.
The Rangers players should experience that for themselves. It appears that too many of them have already checked out, that they are aware that there will be a clearout in the summer, and that they are already keeping an eye on what comes next. But most importantly, we won. It was as if someone had written the ideal conclusion to the ideal script.
I apologize, but I just won’t buy that. Not even for a minute. As pros, I have no doubt that these guys will be itching to go out there and silence their detractors. It is your responsibility to represent the team and the supporters, but you also need to want to represent yourself. There needs to be an underlying pride and a tendency toward selfishness.
“I find it inconceivable that any player would enter such a momentous event without desiring to leave their imprint and return home with a winners’ medal around their neck.
“Why did you even bother playing football in the first place if you don’t feel that way? It doesn’t matter what occurs after the transfer window opens. On a day like this, nothing matters more than getting out of there with your head held high and adding another piece of silverware to the cabinet.
The question is: “How exactly are they going to do it? Well, first and foremost, they have to start the game properly because that’s simply not been the case in the last two derbies. I’ve played in enough of these games to know how it works. The first 20 minutes are hell for leather; there’s hardly time to breathe, much less think your way through it. This is a question that my fellow supporters have been asking me all week.
“Keeping things simple in your own mind is the key to survival. Take the lead in your initial tackle. Get your first header in. Utilize your initial pass to locate a teammate. Just make sure you’re on target with whatever it is.

Let’s be honest, people are questioning these players’ mentality, and if I were in that dressing room, that would be eating me alive. I would be so determined to try to put that right. If these players want to enjoy their summer and give the fans something to celebrate, then that’s the way they have to go about it. If they start well, then they’ve got a real good chance of winning it.
“You are playing for an amazing football team in a cup final. You have half of that stadium to yourself, and hundreds of thousands of people are seated to watch you on television. Why wouldn’t you want to be the dominant male? You have dedicated your entire career to achieving these moments. I wish I was with them in that situation. However, my time has already passed.
“My job will be to walk that trophy out into the centre circle before kick-off. It’s up to them to bring it home.”
