Surprisingly, on Tuesday, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone defended recently retired umpire Angel Hernandez.

Hernandez, an MLB umpire for more than thirty years, announced his retirement on Monday.

Boone made an appearance on the “Talkin’ Yanks” podcast on Tuesday. When asked what he felt about Hernandez’s abrupt retirement, the Yankees captain (18:01 mark) responded.

Boone remarked, “I guess a little just caught off guard by the timing of it.” To be honest, I believe that he is occasionally unfairly used as a poster child, the face of poor umpiring, or another example. I think there are worse umpires than them.

According to Aaron Boone, there are umpires worse than Angel Hernandez, therefore he’s not as terrible as people assume.@BHlJHsNarE on Twitter

Boone and Hernandez have a history of disagreements. However, the Yankees have occasionally benefited from some of Hernandez’s “bad” decisions.

The final time Hernandez officiated at home plate for the Chicago White Sox was on May 9 at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois, against the Cleveland Guardians. Hernandez departed the team following the White Sox’s 3-2 triumph and never showed up again. Jacob Metz, a second-year umpire, took his place.

The 1991 season was Hernandez’s major league umpiring debut. The 62-year-old has now worked almost 4,000 MLB games. Due to a health problem, Hernandez played in just 46 games in the previous season, which was his lowest total since 1992.
