After a historic 2023 campaign culminating in the program’s first College Football Playoff title and 12th all-time national championship, the Michigan Wolverines hope to remain atop the college football world in 2024

With numerous star players departing for the NFL and former head coach Jim Harbaugh bringing much of the coaching staff to the Los Angeles Chargers, the Wolverines enter 2024 with a team that seeks to maintain its recent success while gaining experience in key positions.

As Sherrone Moore begins his first full season as head coach of the Wolverines, Michigan will certainly face numerous title-contending programs this season that could potentially knock off the defending champions.

It is worth noting that Moore holds a 4-0 head coaching record after serving as interim head coach through Harbaugh’s two separate suspensions in the 2023 season.

According to BetMGM’s online sportsbook, as of May 20, the Wolverines have the eighth-best odds to win the 2024 College Football Playoff and National Championship at +2000.

Below are five teams that could stand in the way of the Wolverines’ quest to repeat as College Football Playoff champions this season:

The Longhorns come into Ann Arbor early in the season for a matchup that could be one of the best non-conference games in the 2024 regular season.

With Texas returning quarterback Quinn Ewers to an already talented offense, the Longhorns will be the first major test for newly hired defensive coordinator Don Martindale as he attempts to continue the Wolverines’ pro-style defensive scheme.

The contest between the Longhorns and Wolverines will be on Sept. 7 at noon (EST) from Michigan Stadium on Fox.

The Ducks pose a threat to the Wolverines this season as they bring their high-profile skill to the Big Ten in the program’s inaugural season in the conference.
