My first pick for most underappreciated player would be Mitch Wishnowsky, because Punterville can never appreciate the punter enough. Jokes aside, I have no argument with this take whatsoever.
Jennings showed up huge on 3rd down in 2023 and also was on track to maybe be the Super Bowl MVP. He’s a legit wide receiver who has to share his time with both Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk—and been a pro about it. Even when his coach calls boneheaded plays in the NFC Divisional meant for Samuel that get him blown up.
I know we may go to the defense on this and say Deommodore Lenoir, who has shaped up into a solid player. I think when Lenoir’s time comes he might price himself out of the 49ers given all the money going around.
I’d also toss Kyle Juszscyk into this also. When Juszscyk is out, the running game takes a nosedive. The best example of this was in 2019 when he was injured and the 49ers offense took a step back.
He also seems to get a lot of gruff from everyone wondering if he’s really worth all the money the 49ers paid him making him the highest paid fullback at many points (and the answer is, yes he is).
But I’d say Jennings is the most underappreciated player simply because he doesn’t get that cash that Juszscyk does, yet be responsible for some huge plays in 2023. He was set to an unrestricted free agent tender and had to give a nudge of sorts to get a better deal done. When Kendrick Bourne, another underappreciated player in my opinion, left, the departure left a wound on the wide receiver group that Jennings has not only healed with his development, but I’d argue he’s better as the third wide receiver than Bourne was.
