WVLT – KNOXVILLE, Tenn. At Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, on Friday, the SEC Tournament Quarterfinals between No. 5 seed Tennessee (18-11, 10-6 SEC) and No. 4 seed Alabama (23-8, 10-6 SEC) will take place.
The game is being broadcast on the SEC Network.
The Crimson Tide secured the No. 4 seed when UT lost to No. 1 South Carolina in Columbia on Sunday, 76-68, and Bama won at Texas A&M, 78-71, putting both teams 10-6. The Lady Vols and Alabama were equal for fourth place in the conference standings.
In their previous match on February 8 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama defeated Tennessee 72-56, earning the right to advance to the tiebreaker round.
Tennessee defeated Kentucky 76-62 on Thursday afternoon in the second round, outscoring the Wildcats 48-36 over the last two quarters to secure a spot in Friday’s SEC play.
We’re off to a fast start on Quarterfinal round day in Greenville. The Lady Vols jumped out to a 6-0 lead and so far five different players have scored for Tennessee. But Bama’s Sarah Ashlee Barker has two 3-pointers keeping the Tide close. UT leads 10-8 at the first media timeout.
On Thursday it was Sara Puckett picking up the slack with top scorer Rickea Jackson in foul trouble. Well, Jackson hasn’t gotten into trouble in this quarterfinal round game, but the player not named Rickea really stepping up has been guard Jewel Spear who would hit four 3-poiunters in the first half and head into the locker room with a team high 16 points.
The Lady Vols are sporting new Summitt blue uniforms today, and the player who has been wearing them the best is none other than Rickea Jackson. Jackson scored 14 points in the first half to help the Lady Vols take a commanding 42-19 lead over their rivals from Alabama going into halftime.
Tamari has been the main attraction early in the second half. Tennessee’s large center has scored six points in a row. The Lady Vols are ahead 50–35 and she has eight overall.
Sara Puckett had a day yesterday. Jewel Spear, who is now playing today, has a game-high 24 points and is 6-for-6 from beyond the arc as @LadyVol_Hoops increases its advantage over Alabama to 68-44 at the end of three quarters. UT won the game 26–15 against Alabama.
