Gone to Soon: New York Rangers legend died in a hospital minutes ago due to automobile accident….

With a new team comes a new number for Reilly Smith.

The New York Rangers acquired Smith from the Pittsburgh Penguins this offseason in efforts to boost their offensive depth.

Smith is usually accustomed to wearing No. 19 on his jersey, but in New York he can’t do that as his preferred number is actually retired by the Rangers in honor of Jean Ratelle.

Now, the 33-year-old forward is set to wear the No. 91, which was previously repped by forward Alexander Wennberg.

Some other Rangers players that have worn the No. 91 include Vladimir Tarasenko, Sammy Blais, Evgeny Grachev and Markus Naslund.

This past season, Smith recorded 13 goals, 27 assists and 40 points in 76 games for the Penguins.

We’re very excited to get Reilly, a player we’ve been looking at and talking about for a while,” Rangers president and general manager Chris Drury said.

“Brings a lot of versatility to our lineup, has a winning pedigree having won in Vegas. A proven playoff performer and I think just fits in nicely with our entire group.

We just were talking to a lot of different agents and a lot of balls in the air throughout the day, and just felt this was the best move we can make.”
