One of the highest-rated prospects in the 2025 recruiting class is Galveston Ball’s Jonah Williams, a consensus five-star athlete who is currently ranked as that class’s 10th overall prospect by the 247Sports Composite. The “athlete” label is appropriate in multiple ways for Williams.
He has the size and skill-set to conceivably play wide receiver, safety, or linebacker in college, and he is also a very talented baseball player and could be a high pick in the 2025 Major League Baseball draft after his senior year.
Williams reportedly named Texas as one of his seven finalists in late April.
Current recruiting industry predictions for his eventual college destination lean toward Oklahoma, with a smaller number predicting Texas A&M, though the early signing period for the 2025 recruiting class is still over seven months away.
Even after he signs with a college program, he could still be picked early in next year’s baseball draft, and depending on what level of signing bonus he is offered he could face a tough decision on whether to turn pro in that sport, play both football and baseball in college, or play one in college while giving the other up.
His older brother Nick Williams, himself a three-sport athlete at Galveston Ball who considered football his best sport in high school, was a top baseball recruit in the 2012 class and a longtime Texas commit before signing with Texas A&M, but he ended up playing for neither school after he was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 2nd round of the 2012 baseball draft and ultimately chose to accept a $500,000 signing bonus to turn pro.
Should Jonah spurn both Major League Baseball (at least temporarily) and overtures from other colleges to sign with the University of Texas, he could become the latest in a long line of Longhorn dual-sport athletes who have starred in both football and baseball.
