Will Anderson Jr. helped keep Chris Braswell out of the starting lineup at Alabama under his senior season. But Braswell is leaning on Anderson as he moves from the Crimson Tide to the NFL.
In 2021 and 2022, Anderson became the third SEC player to earn unanimous All-American recognition twice, and the presence of Anderson and Dallas Turner kept Braswell from playing as much as he might have.
“(Anderson) just told me to just keep working hard,” Braswell said during the Bucs’ rookie minicamp. “Do what you always been doing since you was in college and before.
“It’s kind of similar to the Bama defense,” Braswell said. “Very similar, just different word terms and everything, so just got to learn the new terminology, the new language and then everything should be fine.”
“At the end of the day, I’m still a rookie,” Braswell said. “I still got to learn from the veteran guys. You know, pick their brains to help elevate my game as well.”
Braswell joins an outside-linebacker depth chart that includes Yaya Diaby, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and Randy Gregory. Diaby led the Buccaneers with 7.5 sacks as a rookie in 2023. Tryon-Shoyinka had five sacks in 12 starts last season. Former second-round pick Gregory has joined Tampa Bay for his eighth NFL season.
Tampa Bay will move into Phase 3 of its offseason program on Tuesday. Commonly called OTAs (for Organized Team Activities), this period of practice allows NFL teams to expand their offseason on-the-field work to include 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills matching the offense and defense. Contact is still not allowed, but group drills can proceed at more than a walkthrough pace now.
