Two former Grand Valley State football players will have an opportunity to make an NFL roster as rookies this year, including one with his home-state Detroit Lions.

Quarterback Cade Peterson received a rookie minicamp invite from the Lions on Monday, while former GVSU teammate and defensive end Christian McCarroll received an invitation from the Indianapolis Colts.

Four from last year’s class ended up sticking with the Lions, including cornerback Steven Gilmore, who made the 53-man roster, while offensive lineman Connor Galvin, safety Brandon Joseph and defensive tackle Chris Smith spent the season on the practice squad and remain with the franchise.

The 6-foot-4, 223-pound Peterson was a three-year starter at GVSU, a two-time Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and the fourth Laker quarterback to pass for more than 4,000 career yards and run for more than 1,000.

In 2023, the Maple City, Mich., native completed 63 percent of his passes for 2,116 yards and 20 touchdowns against eight interceptions, while rushing for 425 yards and six scores on 92 carries for the 11-2 Lakers.

For his career, Peterson threw for 7,231 yards and 67 touchdowns against 26 interceptions, while tallying 1,686 rushing yards and 21 scores.

McCarroll, a 6-foot-4, 260-pound Barberton, Ohio, native, is coming off a senior season that saw him earn All-American honors from four different outlets and repeat as the GLIAC Defensive Lineman of the Year, after collecting 67 tackles, 15 stops for loss and eight sacks.
