After an epic Meet of Champions, it’s time to honor the N.J. track and field teams who excelled throughout the 2024 season.
Last week’s group state championships served as the ultimate test for every N.J. track and field team, providing a clear picture of where they stood against the rest of the state.
While only six teams took home state championships, the competition highlighted numerous others that proved they could hold their own against some of the more established contenders in our rankings.
Union Catholic won the Non-Public A state title last week, scoring 114.67 points to wrap up an undefeated season.
UC won both the Union County and UCC championships, along with a county relay title.
Avery Atexide (400) and Justice Hicks (long jump) won state titles and Jimmy Wischusen finished his senior year with a Meet of Champions title in the 3,200.
Westfield won its first Group 4 title last weekend, scoring 77 points.
It’s just the third state title in program history and the first since 1977.
Avery Keith won the Group 4 state title in the 3,200 (8:57.74) and its 4×800 quartet also won a state title, finishing the year at N.J. No. 2 with a 7:52.23.
Demarest won the Group 2 title last Saturday, having gone undefeated in team competitions for the second year in a row.
Liam Paneque was stellar in the final week of the season, winning Group 2 titles in the long and triple jump.
Paneque posted a meet record in the long jump (25-2) to win gold at Meet of Champions.
The Norsemen’s 4×800 squad also won a Group 2 and M of C’s title.
