The former Dukes guard/forward was selected as the Sun Belt Player of the Year for 2024.
LOUISVILLE, KY: The first official commitment made by the Louisville men’s basketball team that is unrelated to Pat Kelsey, the new head coach, has been made.
Terrance Edwards Jr., a former guard/forward at James Madison and the 2024 Sun Belt Player of the Year, has committed to the Cardinals, as reported by Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68.
Edwards joins guard Reyne Smith and center James Scott as the third transfer to pledge to Louisville this offseason. Before assuming the head coaching job with the Cardinals late last month, Kelsey was the head coach of Charleston for the previous three seasons, where Smith and Scott are both transferring in.
For Louisville, the 6-foot-6, 190-pound wing is a huge addition. He started every one of JMU’s 36 games and led the Dukes in scoring, rebounds, and assists per contest with an average of 17.2. In addition, he made 42.7 percent of his field goals, 34.3 percent of his three-pointers, and 81.0 percent of his free throws from the line.
James Madison finished the season with 32-4 wins, the most in school history, thanks in large part to Edwards. This includes securing a No. 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament and winning the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. After upsetting No. 5 Wisconsin in the first round, JMU lost to fourth-seeded Duke in the Round of 32.
Additionally, during his tenure, the Atlanta native was named the Sun Belt’s Sixth Man of the Year.
sophomore year of last season as a redshirt. With James Madison, Edwards has played in 117 games and had 71 starts. In those games, he has 1,414 points, 525 rebounds, 278 assists, and 111 steals.
The three portal commits from Louisville this offseason won’t be their final additions to the team. The Cardinals’ roster started to rotate as soon as second-year head coach Kenny Payne was fired on March 13.
There are no scholarship players returning for Louisville as of April 3, as 11 players have entered the portal after their 2023–24 season ended. The only player scheduled to return is walk-on guard Hercy Miller, since two more have graduated. Additionally, UofL’s Class of 2024 contains no committed high school recruits.
