Ohio State secured their ticket to the National Championship with a commanding 28-14 win over Texas in the Cotton Bowl, clinching another College Football Playoff (CFP) Semifinal victory.
The Buckeyes’ triumph not only earned them the chance to face Notre Dame in the championship game but also brought in a substantial financial reward for the Big Ten.
However, the contrasting payouts between conference teams and independents such as Notre Dame have sparked renewed discussions about the fairness of CFP earnings distribution.
The electric atmosphere on and off the field underscored Ohio State’s dominance as they clinched their spot in the title game.
Beyond the victory, the Buckeyes delivered a financial windfall for their conference.
According to Front Office Sports, Ohio State’s Cotton Bowl win added $6 million to the Big Ten’s CFP earnings, pushing the conference’s total CFP payout to a staggering $46 million.
The Big Ten’s success this season was unprecedented, producing four playoff teams–Ohio State, Penn State, Oregon, and Indiana.
Each contributed to the total earnings, with the Nittany Lions leading the pack by generating $14 million with their CFP Semifinal run.
Ohio State’s individual playoff payout now totals $20 million, the highest among Big Ten teams.
However, as a member of a conference, the Buckeyes will receive only a fraction of that.
The Big Ten splits its earnings among its 18 member schools, leaving OSU with $2.5 million from their semifinal win.
