Richard Petty’s golden career featured such brush-up moments with rivals on the racetrack, starting from his early days.
During the 1959 race at Lakewood Speedway, his own father Lee Petty stirred up a storm and invalidated his son’s victory.
Then during a 1971 Bowman Gray race, Petty was furious about Bobby Allison claiming the victory that he thought belonged to him.

During the 1979 Daytona 500, Richard Petty grabbed the checkered flag while the Allison brothers and Cale Yarbrough got into a bitter fight.
Yet Petty did have a few moments of his own, one of which involved NASCAR’s ‘bad boy’, Gary Balough.
Balough dominated regional tracks from his home tracks in Florida to the northeast’s Modified circuits.
But before he could venture into the NASCAR Cup Series as a full-time driver, Balough was convicted of being involved in a multi-million dollar dr-g trafficking ring in 1982.
He was jailed and then released several times until 2010.
