Texas Longhorns are ‘Lucky to Have’ Arizona Cardinals OT According to Steve Sarkisian, Christian Jones
Texas Longhorns offensive tackle The Arizona Cardinals selected Christian Jones in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
AUSTIN: Christian Jones, an offensive tackle for the Texas Longhorns, led the 2023 team without a doubt this past season, but his path to the NFL was never quite as obvious as that of some of his teammates.
Any remaining uncertainties were officially dispelled on Saturday when Jones’ NFL aspirations were fulfilled when the Arizona Cardinals selected him with the 162nd overall pick in the fifth round. He was drafted into the Texas class of 2022, which included 11 choices, a program record.
Jones has been assigned to cover quarterback Kyler Murray, a former Oklahoma Sooners standout, on an offense that also selected Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. with the fourth overall choice. The national media may not have noticed Jones’ acquisition yet, but he might be very important to a Cardinals team building around its 2024 draft class.
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian showed his former offensive tackle, Jones, a lot of respect after the draft.
According to Texas Athletics, Sarkisian stated, “I think his best days are ahead of him because he hasn’t played a ton of football relative to most guys.” He still has room to grow as a player, and if he does, he will undoubtedly become a very effective professional player. He is a fantastic player, teammate, and all-around wonderful representative of the Cardinals, and they are fortunate to have him.”
Sarkisian remarked, “Arizona got a great player and a guy with a very bright future in the NFL.”
Over his six years at Texas, Jones made 48 starts and appeared in 61 games. The coaches of the league named him an honorable mention All-Big 12 in 2022 and 2023, and he was a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award in 2023. All the while, he blocked for Jonathan Brooks, Roschon Johnson, and Bijan Robinson.
