“We have won two straight series,” A.J. Hinch, the manager, stated. “I’m content with it. Certainly, this was a difficult defeat. We were a bit short because we had a narrow lead for the majority of the game and were unable to generate enough momentum to extend it. However, we win both series, so we can go home. We are eager to visit Comerica.”
The No. 1 choice in the 2018 draft, Casey Mize of the Detroit Tigers, returns to MLB after two years away.

As the 27th man for Thursday’s doubleheader, right-hander Matt Manning was called up from Triple-A Toledo. He went 5⅔ innings without allowing a hit on 90 pitches, which helped to start the no-hit attempt.

“Not my best stuff,” admitted Manning, who has not given up more than two hits in each of his last four starts going back to the previous campaign. “To be honest, it was just tedious. It wasn’t good at all by my particular standards.”

Harrison Bader got a leadoff bloop single off left-handed reliever Tyler Holton in the eighth inning, ending the no-hitter. 69.3 mph was its exit velocity.

With two strikes, Bader reached for a down-and-away changeup, and he poked the ball into left field. The ball came to rest amongst shortstop Javier Bañez, left fielder Mark Canha, and center fielder Parker Meadows…

Since Game 1 of the doubleheader on Thursday, 13 straight hitless innings by Tigers pitchers have been broken up by the single. Using Manning as the 27th man, the Tigers sent the leader of the no-hit bid, Manning and Hinch, back to Triple-A Toledo, but not before they had a talk.

Hinch claimed, “He was fighting it the entire time.” “Even though it wasn’t his best, he still achieved the best outcomes we could have asked for, so I just discussed with him in my office how days like that will happen and then you look up and realize there were no hits or runs. He had to fight all day, really.”

About the conversation with Hinch, Manning was questioned.

“I just told him I got a lot to button up before I face the Indianapolis Indians,” Manning stated.

Pete Alonso’s leadoff home run in the ninth inning wasn’t cheap, but Bader’s leadoff single in the eighth inning might have been lucky. Right-handed reliever Faedo delivered a low changeup that he crushed for a one-run home run.

The home run tied the score at one.

Hinch stated, “We had one guy left in the bullpen, which is right-handed reliever Will Vest. “Alex Faedo was really aggressive today, throwing an offspeed pitch below the zone that Alonso crushed. At this level, there are a few “tippe your cap” moments. That is undoubtedly one of them.

Game 2 of the doubleheader featured right-hander José Buttó against the Tigers.r.
