As conversations with Ajax club media have shown, Jorrel Hato’s summer departure is not a given. The youngster has enjoyed some heavy interest from several top European clubs, but he seems open to a longer stay in Amsterdam.
Arsenal and Chelsea, in particular, have been tracking the 19-year-old Hato, who was asked about his future plans. “The smartest thing is to look at it per season. That’s what I do,” said the defender. “Of course, you want to achieve things in the end: the Champions League, a World Cup and a European Championship.”

“I still have plenty of time. I don’t think: I absolutely have to win the Champions League in two years,” Hato continued his story. What is the youngster’s ultimate football dream? “That is winning a World Cup. You want to be there when it happens.”
Hato has already faced Lamine Yamal with the Dutch national team, but in the Eredivisie the Ajax defender cannot compete with such top players. He spoke of the domestic dynamic.
“In the Dutch league, you have to show how good you are against the big clubs. Ultimately, I have to continue to develop the things I am already good at, so that it becomes the best. How do I describe my time at Ajax? Ajax is home for me. I just feel at home here.”
The attendance for Chelsea’s 2-0 win was announced as 22,137, in a ground which can hold 71,000 spectators – though the entire top tier was closed.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, said: “I think the environment was a bit strange, the stadium was almost empty, not full.
“We are professional and we have to adapt to the situation, to the environment. You have to adapt when you play with a full stadium. You have to adapt when the stadium is not full but it doesn’t matter.”
Sources had told the BBC that Fifa was expecting a crowd of about 26,000.
A small middle tier seemed to be mostly full, but a larger bottom tier was more than half empty.
The Ajax academy, or ‘De Toekomst’ (‘The Future’) as it’s commonly known in the Netherlands, has a proud history of producing some of the best players on the planet dating all the way back to its creation in 1900. From legends such as Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten, Ruud Krol, Frank Rijkaard and Dennis Bergkamp to modern-day stars like Christian Eriksen, Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt, Ajax have consistently seen their faith in homegrown talent rewarded en route to becoming the most successful club in Dutch football.
Those traditions are as strong today as ever, with Jorrel Hato the latest to be attracting attention from Europe’s other elite clubs. Like De Ligt before him, Hato has defied his tender age to become a fixture in the Ajax defence, and it has been reported that Chelsea and Liverpool are both interested in bringing him to the Premier League after previous links to Arsenal.
Fortunately, Ajax are also adept at identifying generational talents from abroad, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Jari Litmanen, Luis Suarez and Dusan Tadic just a few of those who have joined the club’s Hall of Fame down the years. As such, they already have a suitable replacement lined up if Hato does depart, in the form of 17-year-old Jorthy Mokio. In his first full season at the Johan Cruyff ArenA, records have tumbled around Mokio as he’s quickly outgrown the reserves to force his way into the Ajax starting XI and earn a spot in the Belgium national team.
