Much like his stint in Chicago, Fields was OK but not great with the Steelers, where he displayed many of the same issues that plagued him with the Bears.
And, according to Jets reporter Nick Faria of Jets X-Factor, it doesn’t look like much has changed with Fields’ game through the team’s minicamp last month.
“Some of the issues that we saw earlier in his career: completion percentage in the fourth quarter, being late on his reads, being too slow to process, bailing from the pocket a little bit too early, all of those things have followed him over the last four years with the Chicago Bears and the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Faria said.
“You’re seeing similar things happen at minicamp. You saw it happen where some of the issues he had where he was late on some of his throws, he was late in his processing, that was happening at minicamp.”
While it’s still very early in the process, that review does not lend much hope that things will be different for Fields in New York.
What makes the situation even more troublesome is that the Jets don’t have a great supporting cast around Fields when it comes to pass-catchers, something that was also an issue in Pittsburgh and Chicago.
Garrett Wilson is a star, but Allen Lazard and Josh Reynolds are unimpressive projected second and third options in the passing attack.
Beyond those two, the Jets have disappointing 2024 draft pick, Malachi Corley, and rookies Arian Smith and Mason Taylor, both of whom are unproven.
Perhaps Fields will find what he has been missing during his career in New York, but that’s not something we’re betting on.
