The New York Giants and running back Saquon Barkley appear to be headed for a divorce this offseason.
According to Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports, the Giants “are not expected to use the franchise tag again, according to the source, especially now that it’s bumped up to $12.1 million.
And they’re not expected to increase the contract offer he rejected last offseason—a deal that likely isn’t on the table anymore, anyway.”
If that is indeed the approach the Giants will take to Barkley this offseason, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise.
The 27-year-old missed three games due to injury and didn’t look like a superstar when healthy, rushing for 962 yards and six touchdowns while adding 41 catches for 280 yards and another four scores.
Those numbers are hardly shabby, but it wasn’t the type of season that warrants Christian McCaffrey-type money, either.
And Vacchiano reported, citing a team source, that Barkley’s production “only strengthened the resolve of [general manager Joe Schoen] that running backs aren’t a great long-term investment.”
Barkley was far more effective in 2022, rushing for 1,312 yards and 10 touchdowns while adding 57 catches for 338 yards and missing just one game.
After that campaign, the Giants reportedly offered him an extension worth around $13 million per season, which he turned down.
The Giants then hit him with the franchise tag (worth $10.1 million), Barkley didn’t sign it and the two sides eventually came to terms on a one-year adjusted tag worth up to $11 million (though his incentives were reportedly tied to making the playoffs, which the 6-11 Giants didn’t do, meaning his payout was probably about $10.1 million, or the same as his original franchise tag figure).
